How area conversion works
Area units are the squares of length units, so the exact length definitions carry straight over — just squared.
Everything here converts through the square metre:
- 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² · 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m² (exact)
- 1 acre = 4,046.8564 m² · 1 hectare = 10,000 m²
- 1 mi² = 2,589,988.11 m² = 640 acres = 259 hectares
Note the squaring effect: a metre is only about 3.28 feet, but a square metre is about 10.76 square
feet. Doubling a room’s side length quadruples its area — a common source of estimation errors when comparing
property listings across countries.
Handy approximations
- m² → ft²: multiply by 10.8 (100 m² ≈ 1,076 ft²)
- ft² → m²: divide by 10.8, or take 9.3% (1,000 ft² ≈ 93 m²)
- acres → hectares: multiply by 0.4 (10 acres ≈ 4 ha)
- hectares → acres: multiply by 2.5 (4 ha ≈ 9.9 acres)
Worked example
A 100 m² flat: 100 ÷ 0.09290304 = 1,076.4 ft². The same flat is 0.01 hectares,
about 0.0247 acres, or 119.6 square yards.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square metre?
1 m² = 10.7639 ft² (because 1 foot = 0.3048 m exactly, so 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m²). A 100 m² apartment is about 1,076 ft².
How many square metres are in an acre?
1 acre = 4,046.86 m² exactly — roughly 0.405 hectares, or about 75% of a football (soccer) pitch. 1 hectare ≈ 2.47 acres.
What is a hectare?
A hectare is 10,000 m² — a square 100 m on each side. It is the standard metric unit for land: 100 hectares make a square kilometre, and 1 hectare ≈ 2.471 acres.
How do I convert square feet to square yards?
Divide by 9, since a yard is 3 feet and 3² = 9. So 1,800 ft² = 200 yd² — handy for carpet and flooring, which is often priced per square yard.
How many acres are in a square mile?
Exactly 640 acres. This comes from the US survey system: a square mile "section" was historically divided into quarter-sections of 160 acres.
