The weighted grade formula

Grade = (score₁ × weight₁ + score₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)

Weights reflect how much each piece of work counts. Enter scores as percentages and weights in any consistent unit — percent of the course, points, or credits.

Worked example

Homework 85% worth 20, and a midterm 72% worth 30: (85 × 20 + 72 × 30) ÷ 50 = 3,860 ÷ 50 = 77.2%. If the final exam is worth the remaining 50 and you want 80% overall, you need (80 × 100 − 3,860) ÷ 50 = 82.8% on the final.

Frequently asked questions

How is a weighted grade calculated?
Multiply each score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the total weight: grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight). A 90 worth 20% and an 80 worth 30% give (90×20 + 80×30) ÷ 50 = 84.
Do my weights have to add up to 100?
No — the calculator divides by the sum of the weights you enter, so any consistent weighting works (points, percentages or ratios).
How do I find what I need on the final exam?

What if the required final score is over 100?
