GST rate

Exclusive vs inclusive: two different formulas

Adding GST to a tax-exclusive price is a straight percentage:

GST = price × r ÷ 100  ·  gross = price + GST

Removing GST from a tax-inclusive price is where people slip up. The inclusive price is already 100 + r percent of the base, so the tax inside it is:

GST = inclusive price × r ÷ (100 + r)

Taking r% of the inclusive price instead would tax the tax — for an 18% rate the error is almost 3% of the bill.

Worked example (18%)

Add: a base price of 1,000 at 18% gives GST = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = 180, so the invoice total is 1,180. Remove: starting from that inclusive 1,180, GST = 1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = 180, recovering the 1,000 base exactly. On an intra-state Indian invoice, the 180 is shown as CGST 90 + SGST 90.

India's GST slabs

CGST, SGST and IGST

Within a state, the GST charge is split 50:50 between central and state governments — 18% billed as 9% CGST + 9% SGST. Across state lines the whole amount is billed as IGST at the full rate; the money is the same, only the ledger changes. The calculator's split row applies to intra-state sales.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add GST to a price?
Multiply the base price by the rate: GST = price × rate ÷ 100, and the total is price + GST. Adding 18% GST to 1,000 gives 180 of GST and a total of 1,180.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Use GST = inclusive price × rate ÷ (100 + rate). From a GST-inclusive 1,180 at 18%: GST = 1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = 180, so the base price is 1,000. Simply taking 18% of 1,180 (212.40) is wrong — the tax was charged on the base, not the total.
What are CGST and SGST?
On sales within an Indian state, GST is split equally between the centre (CGST) and the state (SGST) — each is half the total GST. An 18% intra-state sale is billed as 9% CGST + 9% SGST. Inter-state sales charge the full amount as IGST instead.
What are the GST rates in India?
The main slabs are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. 18% is the most common rate for services and many goods; essentials sit at 0–5%, and luxury or "sin" goods at 28% (sometimes plus cess). Use the custom option for other rates.
Does this work for other countries' GST?
Yes — the add/remove math is identical everywhere. Enter 10% for Australia, 15% for New Zealand, or 9% for Singapore via the custom rate; just ignore the CGST/SGST split, which is specific to India.
