Decimal (GB) vs binary (GiB) — the two counting systems

Data sizes are counted two different ways, and mixing them up is the single biggest source of confusion in storage:

Why a “1 TB” drive shows ~931 GB

The manufacturer counts in decimal: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes — and that is genuinely what the drive stores. Windows then divides those bytes by 1,024³ (a binary tebibyte) and displays 931.32, but labels it “GB”. No capacity is lost; the operating system is simply reporting in GiB while using the decimal unit’s name. The gap compounds with size: a KiB is 2.4% bigger than a KB, a GiB is 7.4% bigger than a GB, and a TiB is 10% bigger than a TB.

1 GB to MB: 1 × 10⁹ ÷ 10⁶ = 1,000 MB exactly. The same gigabyte is 976.56 MiB or 0.9313 GiB in binary units.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB are in a GB?
In decimal (SI) units, exactly 1,000 MB = 1 GB. In binary units, 1,024 MiB = 1 GiB. Storage makers and networks use decimal; Windows historically reports binary sizes but labels them "GB", which causes most of the confusion.
Why does my 1 TB drive show only about 931 GB?
The drive really does hold 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides that by 1,024³ and shows 931.32 — a binary GiB figure labelled "GB". Nothing is missing; the two systems just count differently.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
GB (gigabyte) is decimal: 10⁹ = 1,000,000,000 bytes. GiB (gibibyte) is binary: 2³⁰ = 1,073,741,824 bytes. A GiB is about 7.4% larger than a GB, and the gap grows at each tier (TiB is ~10% bigger than TB).
Is a megabit the same as a megabyte?
No — a byte is 8 bits. Internet speeds are quoted in megabits per second (Mbps), file sizes in megabytes (MB). A 100 Mbps connection downloads at most 12.5 MB per second.
How many photos fit in 1 GB?
At a typical 4 MB per smartphone photo, roughly 250 photos per GB. A 128 GB phone therefore holds on the order of 30,000 photos — less whatever the OS and apps occupy.
